Back home, I paced the snug. Constance meowed at me. I picked her up and petted her as she fluffed out her fur and meowed even louder.

“What?” I asked.

She wriggled free to the ground, sashayed through the open French windows and headed up the garden. I followed her fluffy body until she reached the closed door in the back wall.

“Wait, What? You want me to open the door for you?” I crossed my arms. “You’re quite capable of jumping over the top.” This cat’s got some cheek, treating me like its servant.

She turned and meowed loudly and I put my hands to my ears.

“For goodness sake,” I said as I grabbed the large metal handle and twisted it. As I opened the door, I jumped.

Lynn stood before me. “Well hello, lovey. What a nice surprise.”

“Hi, Lynn,” I said. Thanks, Constance.

“I was going to pop around and see you. Annie asked me if I could lend you some tables for your café?”

“It’s a charity tea for the neighbours. I’m not opening a café.”

“We’ll see about that, lovey.” She winked at me. “Anyway, of course you can borrow the tables and I’ve a list of neighbours you can invite. Do you want to pop in for a cuppa?”

“Thanks, but I’m busy designing my invites.”

“That’s a shame.”

Lynn pulled a typed list out of her pocket and passed it to me. “How are you sleeping, deary?”

“Fine. I seem to have got over my er … problems.”

Lynn raised her eyebrows. “Well, if there are any issues, remember don’t hesitate to ask. There’s all sorts I can do.”

I don’t doubt that, I thought. But I wanted to deal with this matter in the living world, I’d had enough ghostly experiences to last a lifetime and I was a little wary that she wanted to use me to contact Zoe. I thanked Lynn and headed back to my house.

As I reached the snug, my phone rang. I picked it up from the table. Wendy calling. I smiled as I answered it, I’d texted asking her to call me when she was free for a chat.

“Hi Wendy. I wondered how many of your society will be coming for the afternoon tea?”

“I’ve drummed up a lot of business for you. There’ll be twenty-two of us.”

“Twenty-two? Wow, that’ll pretty much fill the place up.”

“Indeed. I wondered whether you wanted to do a separate sitting for us?”

“That’s an excellent idea. I’ll update the leaflet to ask people to book ahead.”

“Perfect, the ladies are really keen. They already want to book you as a judge for our next baking competition.”

“Oh dear, pressure,” I laughed.

“It’s going to be a resounding success, I’m sure of it.”

“Do you want to pop over tomorrow morning and help drop some leaflets?” I wanted to see Wendy again and it would be nice to have company on the leaflet drop.

“I’d love to dear but I have appointments for most of tomorrow. I could do the following day?”

“Okay, I’ll let you know how I get on tomorrow and maybe we’ll meet up another time.
